On April 1, 2015, Governor Brown issued an Executive Order directing that the State Water Resources Control Board impose restrictions on urban water users to achieve a statewide 25% reduction in potable urban water use. On May 5, 2015, the State adopted new regulations and mandated a 24% reduction in potable water use for Vallecitos from 2013 demands, which includes Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Institutional potable water demands.

On May 20, 2015, Vallecitos' Board of Directors adopted emergency drought restrictions under Ordinance 195 that limits all outdoor irrigation, excluding certified agricultural or commercial growers, during the months of June through October to 2 unassigned days per week/8 minutes per station.  If demands are not reduced by 24%, additional enforcement may be needed and the District may need to reduce watering to 1 assigned day per week.

To help the District achieve water conservation targets, Vallecitos staff began patrolling the community looking for water waste in May. Almost all of the violations being found are for sprinkler runoff, which occurs when the water from the sprinklers over-sprays or drains onto hard surfaces, such as the sidewalk or gutter. To ensure that our customers' yards stay off our radar, we recommend:

* Test running the sprinklers to check for problems such as broken sprinkler heads, valves or pipes, misaligned sprinkler heads, over-spray or runoff, and make the necessary corrections.

* Checking the irrigation timer to make sure the sprinklers are not set for more than the allowable watering days and times per week and make adjustments if necessary.

* Waiting at least 3 days between watering and if it appears the landscaping is doing well, consider waiting 4 days or longer between waterings.

For customers that need help understanding their irrigation timer, locating problems or increasing the efficiency of their irrigation system, help is available. Vallecitos customers can schedule a FREE landscape irrigation audit.

We appreciate all of our customers continued support for conserving our most precious resource during this challenging water supply period.
