Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

With the recent news about the coronavirus (COVID-19), Vallecitos would like to take this opportunity to reassure customers that Vallecitos’ tap water is available, plentiful and safe.  As always, Vallecitos is committed to providing safe, reliable drinking water for our customers at all times.  Despite widespread fears about the coronavirus, there’s no evidence that the coronavirus is transmitted through water. According to the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, the coronavirus, like the flu, is spread from person to person contact, breathing or contacting respiratory droplets from an infected person, and contacting surfaces contaminated with a virus.  There is currently no evidence to support that the coronavirus (COVID-19) is transmitted through drinking water. The coronavirus can be disinfected through the use of ozone, chlorine and other treatment processes used in processing your tap water. Drinking water provided by Vallecitos’ wholesalers is treated by a combination of technologies – including sedimentation, filtration and disinfection – that chemically deactivate and physically remove bacteria, contaminants and viruses, including the coronavirus. As a result, there is no need to purchase additional bottled water for drinking other than the usual supplies needed to have on hand for other emergencies, such as earthquakes or fires.

Vallecitos conducts thousands of water quality tests each year to ensure that our drinking water meets stringent state and federal drinking water standards, ensuring that only the highest quality water is delivered to our customers.  Learn more about Vallecitos’ water quality in the annual water quality reports.

Some additional steps Vallecitos is taking in response to the coronavirus outbreak include:

  • Actively monitoring the evolving situation to ensure the safety of our employees and the public while maintaining delivery of the highest quality water.
  • Coordinating with our water suppliers to ensure all appropriate safeguards are being taken to keep water supplies safe.
  • Addressing staffing plans in the event essential District personnel are affected.
  • Increasing cleaning efforts and providing hand sanitizers in public and employee areas to ensure customers and employees are safe while at District facilities.
  • Promoting the use of bill payment services that do not require a visit to the District, such as online billing. See all available payment options.

Several highly credible sources have issued statements confirming that the the COVID-19 virus is not spread through drinking water:  

  • According to  U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “There is no higher priority for EPA than protecting the health and safety of Americans. EPA is providing this important information about COVID-19 as it relates to drinking water and wastewater to provide clarity to the public. The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual. EPA has established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater. COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective.”

  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has also stated, “The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.” 

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a technical brief stating that current water treatment methods are expected to be effective against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The brief noted “[the] presence of the COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies and based on current evidence the risk to water supplies is low.” It also asserted “conventional, centralized water treatment methods which utilize filtration and disinfection should inactivate COVID-19 virus” and stated chlorination and UV treatment have been effective against other coronaviruses.
