The Palomar College GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Partnership Program is devoted to increasing the number of students from San Marcos Unified, Escondido Union and Escondido Union High School who are prepared for and admitted to the college of their choice after graduation. GEAR UP exposes students to career paths they may not have known were possible and shows them how to navigate and succeed on that path.
GEAR UP requires partnerships from local businesses and finds ways to connect commerce and future industries with middle school and high school students, teachers, and parents, especially to promote the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Vallecitos signed on as a GEAR UP partner in 2011. The partnership is a win-win for both GEAR UP and Vallecitos, as the students learn about the necessary education and training required to eventually work in the water and wastewater industry, while Vallecitos is able to help raise up the next generation of water utility workers.
Since signing on as a business partner, Vallecitos has been involved in many events for the students, including career fairs, giving presentations on careers in the water and wastewater industry, and arranging full day behind-the-scenes tours of the Vallecitos Water District to show the students the different sectors of the water industry. Vallecitos is proud to be a GEAR UP partner and looks forward to continuing this positive working relationship in the future.
